US Methanol Demand Into Biodiesel – Shrinking as 2 Years Without Tax Credit Support, Rise of Non-Ester Biodiesel Impact

The biodiesel industry contribution to US methanol demand growth continues to be challenged by EPA inaction with respect to Renewable Fuel Standards (RFS). Overall, demand for biodiesel in the US based on both Renewable Identification Numbers (RIN) and biodiesel production data show negative 2019 growth. With imported biodiesel limited, RIN waivers for small refineries, a pause on reinstatement of the federal tax credit, and the emergence of a non-ester competitor continue to cloud future prospects for US methanol demand into biodiesel.
